Submitting your sitemap file to Google ensures that your pages and post will be indexed correctly and you will also be able to monitor the index status of your site. You will also receive notifications from Google if you have received a penalty.
Follow the steps below to submit your WordPress site to Google Search Console.
Submit Website to Google Search Console
Go to (formerly Google Webmaster Tools).
Click on the “Add A Property” button in the top right.
Enter the full URL of your website and click “Continue.” Make sure to include the correct protocol of your site, whether it is HTTP:// or HTTPS:// as this does matter.
Now you will need to verify your site. In this example I am going to use the HTML tag option under “Alternate Methods.” Copy the meta tag it displays to your clipboard.
Head back to your WordPress site. I am going to assume you have the already installed. This is the SEO WordPress plugin I recommend. In your WordPress dashboard click into “SEO” and then into “General.”
Click into the “Webmaster Tools” tab and in the Google Search Console field paste your meta tag that you copied in Step 4. Then click on “Save Changes.”
Now go back to Google Search Console and click on the “Verify” button.
You should then receive a successful confirmation message.
Now you need to submit your sitemap file to Google Search Console. So head back to WordPress dashboard and click into “SEO” and then into “XML Sitemaps.”
I am using SEO framework so you can find this secrtion in your SEO plugin settings. Get the Sitemap url from your SEO plugin and then again head back to search console sitemaps option.
You need to copy your XML Sitemap URL to your clipboard. To do this you can simply right click on the “XML Sitemap” button and select “Copy link address.”
Alternatively, you can also click on the “XML Sitemap” button and copy the URL from your address bar.
Now back in Google Search Console click into “Crawl” and then into “Sitemaps.”
On the top right click on the red “Add/Test Sitemap” button. Then paste your sitemap’s URL that you copied in step 9. Make sure to remove the domain part so that only the sitemap location remains. For example, my full sitemap URL was https://growthminer.io/sitemap_index.xml but in Google Search Console I am only submitting sitemap_index.xml. Then click on the blue “Submit Sitemap” button.
And that’s it! You have now submitted your site to Google Search Console and this will ensure it indexes properly and you can monitor errors and manual actions. As well as the index status of URLs and images on your site.
